Aerial view of Kardamena village and the Aegean sea, Kos

The village

Kardámena

A long sandy beach, a working harbour, and a volcano on the horizon.

Where you will be

A village you can walk

Kardámena is a village on the south coast of Kos, halfway between the airport and the island's quiet western end. It has a long sandy beach, a small working harbour, a seafront of tavernas and cafés, and — if you walk five minutes out of the centre — a coastline where the only sound is the water.

It is the sort of place where you can spend a fortnight without hiring a car: the supermarket, the bakery, the bus stop, the taxi rank and about forty places to eat are all within a few hundred metres of each other. And the boats to Nísyros, the volcano island on the horizon, leave from the harbour at the end of the front.

What is here

The essentials

The beach

Kardamena's central beach is a long, shallow, organised stretch of sand with sun beds and umbrellas, backed by cafés. Walk east or west and it empties out fast. From Ostria View you are five metres from the water; from Cosy it is a two-hundred-metre walk.

The harbour and the boat to Nisyros

The small harbour at the end of the seafront is where the day boats leave for Nísyros — the volcano you can see from every balcony at Ostria View. It is the single best day trip on the island and it starts a short walk from your door.

Eating and drinking

The seafront is lined with tavernas and cafés. The nearest bars to Cosy are metres away: Buddies Bar 20 m, Black Magic 50 m, The Bands Kos 100 m. From the beachfront homes, Pegasus Bar, Atheneon Bar and Artemis Cafe Bar are all around 550–600 m along the front.

Ancient Alasarna

The archaeological site of Alasarna — the ancient settlement Kardamena grew out of — is on the edge of the village: 500 m from Cosy, about 1.7 km from the beachfront homes.

Getting around

The bus stop and the taxi rank are a three-to-four-minute walk from Cosy. Kos International Airport is 8–9 km away, about fifteen minutes by car. Kos Town and the main port are roughly 26 km up the coast.
